Drain Cleaning in Salmon Arm

A sink that will not empty, a tub full of grey water, or sewage at a floor drain. Call and we'll send a plumber.

Most clogs are ordinary: grease in a kitchen line, hair in a tub, or a toilet that got more than it could pass. Some are the main line, and those can flood the lowest bathroom in the house. Call Salmon Arm Plumbing and a plumber will clear it. They tell you the price before they start.

Kitchen, bathroom, or the main line

If one sink is slow and the others are fine, the clog is usually in that fixture's trap or branch. A bathroom that gurgles when the washer drains is often further down the line. If every fixture is slow, or a floor drain is wet, think about the main line leaving the house.

  • Kitchen: grease, coffee grounds, and starch stick to the pipe. A plunger sometimes moves a soft clog. Do not follow it with a bottle of chemical cleaner if the line is already full.
  • Tub and shower: hair and soap. The stopper is the first place to look. A plumber's snake reaches the clog a coat hanger cannot.
  • Toilet: one clogged toilet with other fixtures working is a fixture clog. Sewage in the tub at the same time is a main-line problem. Stop flushing.
  • Laundry: lint and a long hose shoved too far into a standpipe can back up into the tub.

A single toilet clog is also covered on thetoilet and fixture page. If dirty water is already on the floor, treat it as an emergency plumber call.

Snaking, hydro-jetting, and a camera

A snake (an auger) bores a hole through a clog or grabs a wad of roots or wipes. It is the usual first tool for a sink, a toilet, or a main line. It does not scrub the pipe clean. Grease can close up again if the line is coated.

Hydro-jetting uses water at high pressure to wash the wall of the pipe. It is useful on grease and on some roots. It is the wrong tool if the pipe is collapsed or badly broken, because the pressure has to go somewhere. A careful plumber will not jet a line they suspect is about to fail.

A camera inspection shows what the snake felt. It is how you tell roots from a belly in the line, a broken joint, or a toy. Older Salmon Arm houses and properties with large trees often need that look before anyone talks about digging. The camera is a diagnosis. It is not itself a repair.

Tree roots

Roots find moisture at clay or concrete joints. They do not usually pierce a sound plastic pipe, but they will fill an older line year after year. Cutting them with a snake buys time. It does not remove the root in the yard. If the backup returns every spring, say so. The plumber may suggest a camera and, if the pipe is done, a repair of that section. Digging is a different price from a simple clear, and it should be priced on its own.

If sewage is coming up

  1. Stop running water. That includes the dishwasher, the washer, and showers.
  2. Do not keep flushing. Extra water upstairs comes out downstairs.
  3. Keep children and pets out of the wet area. Sewage is a health problem, not just a mess.
  4. If you can get to the main water shut-off without walking through sewage, turn it off.
  5. Take photos, then call. We'll send a plumber.

Typical ranges for a single-fixture clear and for a main-line clear are on thecost and FAQ page. They are typical estimates. Roots, a long driveway, or an after-hours call change the number, and the plumber confirms it.

Homes on septic

A lot of rural Shuswap houses are on a septic system, not a city sewer. What goes down the drain matters: wipes, grease, and "flushable" labels that are not actually safe for a tank will clog the line or fill the tank. A plumber can clear a blocked pipe between the house and the tank. If the tank itself is full, or the field is saturated, that is a septic pumper's job. Pumping is a different trade. Tell us if you are on septic so the right person comes for the symptom you have. A full tank can look exactly like a blocked main, which is why the first question is often "when was it pumped?"

Cabins that sit empty also grow slow drains from dried traps and from lines that were not used all winter. If the backup started the week you opened the place, say that. Seasonal notes for lake communities are on the Shuswap plumber page.
