Leak Repair in Salmon Arm

A pipe you can see, a tap that will not stop, or a stain that keeps growing. Call and we'll send a plumber.

Small leaks wreck floors if they run for weeks. Big ones wreck a Saturday in an hour. Call Salmon Arm Plumbingand a plumber will repair the pipe. They confirm the price before they open a wall. If water is spraying or spreading, shut the main valve and use the emergency plumber steps first.

Leaks you can see

A drip under a sink is often a supply line, a compression fitting, or a trap. Put a bowl under it and do not keep tightening a plastic nut until it cracks. A pipe that sweats in a humid room is not always a leak. Wipe it dry and see if water returns at a joint. Sweat comes back as a film on the whole pipe. A leak wets one spot and drips.

Taps drip from a worn cartridge, a washer, or a seat. Shut the local stops under the sink if they still turn, so the house can keep water while that tap waits. If the stops are seized, use the main. Forcing a seized stop is how a drip becomes a flood in the cabinet. Outdoor hose bibs and frost-free taps belong with the notes on thetoilet and fixture page.

A pinhole in copper, a split in a fitting, or a green crust on a joint is a pipe repair. The plumber may cut out a section or replace a valve. Ask them to look at the rest of that run if one spot has already failed. The first pinhole is sometimes the one you can see, not the only one.

Hidden leaks

Not every leak shows up as a puddle. In Salmon Arm houses the early signs are often a stain, a soft spot in flooring, paint that bubbles, or a mould smell in a cupboard or crawlspace that will not air out. The water meter can help if you are on city water.

  1. Turn off every tap, the ice maker, and the irrigation. Do not run a toilet while you watch.
  2. Look at the meter. A small triangle or a dial that is still moving means water is going somewhere.
  3. Wait twenty minutes without using water and read it again. If the number climbed, water is leaving the system.
  4. Shut the valve at the house, after the meter, and check again. If the meter stops, the leak is inside. If it keeps moving, the leak is between the meter and the house.

That test does not find the spot. It tells you the leak is real. A plumber traces it from the wet material, the meter, and sometimes by isolating branches. Wells have no city meter. On a well, a pump that runs when nobody is using water is the matching clue. That can also be a failed pressure tank, so the well pump page is worth a look before you open walls.

Poly-B in older homes

Poly-B is a grey plastic supply pipe used in many BC houses from the late 1970s into the 1990s. It is worth having a plumber assess it if you see grey pipe and plastic fittings, especially if there has already been a repair. It is not a crisis in every house on the day you notice it. It is a known weak point, and a pinhole or a fitting leak is a fair reason to call. The plumber can say whether a local repair is reasonable or whether a section should be replaced. We do not tell you to rip a house apart from a website. Ask the person who can see the pipe.

Water damage and photos

Before you throw out wet carpet or paint over a stain, take photos. Wide shots and close shots both help an insurance claim. Write down when you first noticed the water. Shut the supply so the damage stops growing. Fans and airflow help after the leak is controlled, but drying is not a substitute for finding the source. A ceiling bubble can hold a surprising amount of water. Do not poke it while you are standing under it without a plan for what comes down.

If the leak is at a hot water tank, or the tank pan is full, go to thehot water tank page. A tank that is leaking from the shell gets replaced. A fitting above the tank may be a smaller repair. If a cold snap started the leak, the frozen and burst pipe page has the shut-off list. Prices for a visit and for labour are typical estimates on thecost page. Your plumber confirms the figure for the actual hole in the actual wall.
