Toilet, Tap and Fixture Repair in Salmon Arm

Toilets that run, clog, or leak at the base

A running toilet is often the flapper, the fill valve, or a chain that does not seat. The water is going into the bowl or down the overflow. It will not flood the room, but it can move a water bill, or run a well pump more than it should. Parts are ordinary. The tank fittings still have to match the toilet. If you have already replaced the flapper and it still runs, say that when you call so nobody brings the same part twice.

A clogged toilet: use a flange plunger, the kind with a cup that folds out, and a careful motion. Do not keep flushing a bowl that is already high. If the water goes down slowly and other drains are fine, it is probably this toilet. If the tub or the floor drain gurgles, it is the main line, and more flushing makes a backup. A wax ring leak shows up as water at the base when the toilet is flushed, or as a soft floor around the bolts. Do not keep using it. Sewage under a wax ring rots the subfloor. Taps and shower valves

A dripping tap, including what some people call a faucet, is usually a cartridge or a washer. Shut the stops under the sink first. If those valves have not moved in years, they can fail when you turn them. Have a plan to use the main shut-off if the stop will not hold. Take a photo of the tap if you can. The brand on the handle tells the plumber which cartridge to bring.

Shower valves control temperature as well as flow. A valve that suddenly runs hot, or will not control the mix, can scald. Do not leave it for a house with children or older adults to "be careful" around. Pressure-balance and thermostatic cartridges wear out. Replacing a cartridge is a smaller job than opening the wall for a new valve. If the valve body in the wall is cracked, the job is bigger. A leak behind the shower that stains the ceiling below is also aleak repair problem, not only a handle problem.

Garburators

A garburator that hums and does not spin is often jammed. The reset button is on the bottom of the unit. Power off at the switch before anyone looks in the drain. Never reach into the hopper with a hand. A hex key in the socket under the unit is the usual way to free the plate, and it is still easy to get wrong if the power is on. Leaks at the sink flange or the dishwasher connection are plumbing, not a jammed motor. If the unit is dead and old, replacement is often simpler than a rebuild. Tell us if it trips the breaker. That is a reason to leave it off until someone sees it.

Outdoor hose bibs

A frost-free hose bib shuts the water off inside the house, where the air is warmer, as long as the hose is disconnected and the pipe can drain. Leave a hose attached in October and the bib can freeze and split anyway. A drip inside the crawlspace after a cold night is a classic result. Shut the inside valve if there is one, and call. None of this is a reason to claim a response time. Daytime fixture work is the normal path. If a toilet supply line lets go and water is running across the floor, shut the stop or the main and call the emergency line. A plumber does the work.
